Health Improvement Project for Teens (HIPTeens)
HIPTeens (Health Improvement Project for Teens) is an evidence-based, theoretically-driven sexual risk reduction intervention for adolescents that enhances knowledge, increases motivation, and teaches behavioral skills needed to reduce pregnancy, HIV, and STI risk.
Provided in small groups by trained facilitators, the intervention is designed to help teens:
Implementation
The program is implemented by trained facilitators using a delivery style that is highly participatory and interactive.
HIPTeens can be divided into 2 four-hour sessions or 8 one-hour sessions.
Session 1
Session 1: Value setting and future goals, sexual health knowledge, and empowerment to practice safer sexual behaviors.
Session 3
Session 3: Condom use and negotiation skills, role of future goals in changing risky behavioral choices.
Session 2
Session 2: Triggers to risk situations, safer behaviors, and identify strategies to reduce risk.
Session 4
Session 4: Self-empowerment, communication, and negotiation skills to develop an individualized menu of risk reduction strategies, and empower personal motivation for achieving healthy behaviors.
Booster Sessions
Booster sessions can be offered to participants upon completion of the intervention. The two 90-minute booster sessions reinforce knowledge, skills, and motivation acquired through the intervention.
