Who can use this type of intervention program?

Community-based organizations, health agencies, clinicians, and educational settings.

Has HIPTeens been tailored for different populations?

The program has been tested and demonstrates effective results with adolescent girls, but has flexibility for adaption. Here is a list of populations that HIPTeens has created adaptations:
– Foster Care
– Juvenile Justice
– Refugees
– College-Aged Young Adults
– Males

What guidelines would be appropriate for a provider/facilitator implementing HIPTeens?

To facilitate interaction and participation we recommend groups of 6-10 in size. Facilitators providing the intervention can be a paraprofessional or professional staff. We think a key component of success will be having facilitators who have the enthusiasm for helping teens and young adults.

Does the HIPTeens program provide medically accurate, age-appropriate programming that is inclusive and culturally appropriate?

Yes, the HIPTeens’ research was conducted in compliance with accepted scientific methods and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Is HIPTeens a culturally and linguistically competent program?

Yes, HIPTeens has incorporated standards, policies and practices that appreciate teens and their unique culturally diverse backgrounds.
HIPTeens is committed to this ongoing process and will make improvements as well as additions to the program as needed.

What are the action plans in place for HIPTeens to be replicated?

The HIPTeens developer has a comprehensive and rigorous Facilitator Training Program that must be completed and maintained on an annual basis. This process allows for successful implementation and maintains the integrity of the manualized intervention.

How inclusive is the HIPTeens program when targeting different populations?

The development of HIPTeens has been created without heteronormative language making the program inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) which does not exclude or isolate anyone.

What languages are available for the HIPTeens program?

Available ONLY in English.

Does the HIPTeens program meet the requirements for the positive youth development (PYD) approach?

Yes, HIPTeens meets all components of the PYD approach. HIPTeens uses this approach to:
– Engage teens within their communities, schools, and organizations, peer groups, and families.
– Promote positive outcomes that include social skills, emotional competence, positive relationships with peers as well as adults, and civic and school engagement.

Does HIPTeens include any subjects on trauma or mental health in its PYD approach?

Encompassing the HIPTeens PYD approach, programming is focused on trauma and mental health needs that work with vulnerable populations, the teens who have experienced maltreatment, abuse, or exposure to violence with proactive responses to bullying and harassment.

Does HIPTeens have the “best practices” that are proven to change behaviors and promote healthy living transitions into adulthood?

Yes, HIPTeens is theoretically-driven, tested in rigorous scientific studies, and includes fidelity monitoring and assessment, standardized intervention training, and a logic model.

What are some of the subjects addressed in HIPTeens that educate teens for transitioning into adulthood?

– Healthy relationships, such as positive self-esteem and relationship dynamics, friendships, dating, caring, and being affectionate without the involvement of sex, marriage, and family interactions.
– Adolescent development, such as the development of healthy attitudes and values about adolescent growth and development, body image, racial and ethnic diversity, and other related subjects.
– Healthy life skills, such as goal-setting, decision-making, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, and stress management.
– Trauma-informed care is addressed in facilitator training through motivational interviewing techniques and trauma-informed care approaches to promote behavior change and a positive discussion environment.

Can HIPTeens be replicated effectively through evaluations in multiple sites, in different settings, and with different populations?

HIPTeens can be replicated in multiple cities, different settings, and diverse populations. However, the male population has not been evaluated but the developer is currently working on this area of research.
